TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE ON THE FILM!
REACT to FILM school partner, Project Create, taught its first ever REACT to FILM class this summer! During the summer course, students watched Planet Rock and Wasteland. To pay tribute to work of artist Vik Muniz in Wasteland, the class made a mixed-media portrait with local artist and educator, Chanel Compton. Ms. Compton painted a portrait of one Project Create’s long-term students on nine 6″x6″ wooden panels. The students collected litter from the banks of the Anacostia park and used it to create texture and color around the portrait.
Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials.
